Pensioner falls prey to scam

2015-08-26 06:00

ANOTHER pensioner fell prey to a scam that resulted in the loss of several thousand rands. Following complaints to the municipality regarding the increasing municipal accounts, an Athlone Park pensioner was delighted when he received a call from a person who inquired and indicated he was from the municipality and that they were following up on pensioner concerns.

Following a discussion, the man alluded that they had someone in the area who would explain how he could benefit from the municipality’s effort to assist pensioners. An appointment was confirmed and a well-groomed Indian man arrived with briefcase and a demonstration meter in hand and explained that they were rolling out special water meters that would automatically calculate a daily free 300 litres and an electricity meter that could reduce a R2 300 bill to as little as R1 000 per month - being that the new meter would be subject to a single increase, as opposed to the four already announced by Escom.

All that was needed to reap the benefit of this tremendous savings was a mere R4 500 that would cover the cost and installation of both meters. Money changed hands, a receipt and reference number was issued and the agent departed with the pensioner waiting in anticipation of installation.

Needless to say, inquiries at the eThekwini revenue department revealed that they have no knowledge of any same or similar programmes to replace meters to secure a reduced rate, either for pensioners or anyone else.

Rather make that call before you hand over your hard- earned cash and people are once again warned - if it sounds too good to be true, then most probably it isn’t true at all. Cllr André Beetge Via email
