MY Sapphire CommUnity chairman, Gaylene Allen said the transformation of the pedestrian subway at Warner Beach has been massive.
"Work on the revamp began two months ago, and flora that was planted is now starting to bloom, adding pockets of colour on either side of the Subway entrance,” she said.

Allen said extra lighting has now been installed, with some of the fittings painted the red and white colours of a lighthouse.
“Besides increasing safety when the sun sets, the lights add a festive touch. They're hard to miss by day, and even harder to miss when it’s dark," she said.

People are using the upgraded subway in growing numbers.
"We have witnessed many locals and visitors using the subway as a shortcut to the beach or shops. Some of them haven’t used it for years because of the shoddy state it was in and because they didn’t feel safe,” explained Barrett Nielson, My Sapphire CommUnity project manager, and local businessman.

“The longer we are here working on the subway the more new faces we see and a greater interest is shown. It is encouraging to see the number of people using the subway for its real purpose – access to the beach and shops.

“Colourful flags of the world have been painted along the walls by volunteers, and this is still a work in progress," according to Romy Wenzel, who represents My Sapphire CommUnity on the Sapphire Coast Tourism committee. "Everyone is welcome to join in and paint a flag – we have the materials and the stencils.

“This weekend, weather permitting, we will be braaiing wors rolls near the subway. Come and join us for a chat, a paint and a wors roll.”

A post will be placed on the My Sapphire CommUnity (MSC) facebook page as well as Toti Trader on Wednesday or Thursday to indicate whether the braai will be Saturday or Sunday.
