Too many people

2015-07-22 06:00

IT is acceptable practice to cull wildlife when their numbers become unsustainable. When they are in danger of extinction because they have depleted their habitat of its resources, drastic measures have to be taken.

We humans are burying ourselves in our filth and raping the resources of our world at an alarming rate, yet we pussy-foot around the problem of over-population. It is a sensitive area. I am not suggesting that we cull our population, but surely the time has come to take preventative measures.

We have destroyed the balance of nature by clever medical procedures which keep people alive so much longer. We have introduced fertility drugs which result in multiple births. We pay child grants which seem to increase the irresponsibility of single parents. Our throw-away stuff reaches outrageous proportions and landfills creep closer to our living areas. Our rivers are polluted with sewage and litter, and yet we go on producing more and more people to add to the problem.

How can we provide houses, employment, education and hospitalisation for an ever-increasing indigent population? I don’t have solutions, but I can think of several humane ways to help prevent unwanted pregnancies and discourage families from having multiple children.

We’re doing a pretty good job of destroying our planet, but we are also on a path of self-destruction.
