PRESIDENT of the Rotary Club Amanzimtoti, Chris Skinner, paid tribute to past president, and ex-Amanzimtoti High principal Tony Larkin at his funeral last week.

“On behalf of the Rotary Club of Amanzimtoti I would like to acknowledge the work of past president Tony Larkin over a period of 40 years. Tony was the longest serving member of the club and we were looking forward to hosting him and Cynthia at our 50th anniversary celebrations on 19 June. Sadly that was not be,” Skinner said.

He said Tony’s record included being president twice, in 1986 to 1987 and again from 2004 to 2005.

“He served with distinction in all avenues of Rotary service from club to vocational, community, and of course, youth service.

“He was particularly active in the club’s Interact and Rotoract branches, in assisting with our youth leadership activities and the Rotary Daily News team- speaking competition,” Skinner said.

He said with past president Arthur Reece, he was involved with the youth exchange programme that hosted students from around the world.

“Tony always had a ready smile, a good sense of humour, a willingness to help in whatever project the club was involved in. Even in later years he attended meetings regularly, was a copious note-taker and scribe for our bulletins and was a board member,” he added.

Skinner said they will remember Tony as being one of their finest Rotarians, reflecting the very best of Rotary’s ideal of “service above self”.
