Why no money for headmen?

2015-07-08 06:01

THE IFP in KwaZulu-Natal is perplexed by claims made by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs that there are no funds to pay the salaries of izinduna, and it would appear that it is because the payments were introduced by Inkosi Nyanga Ngubane of the IFP.

If there were local government elections tomorrow, money for food parcels would be made available, but because there are no elections taking place, no money is available to pay the salaries of izinduna.

Headmen play a major role in ensuring that traditional leaders perform their duties. These people also have families to support.

This issue must be resolved without delay.

Corruption in South Africa has reached epidemic levels and threatens the lives of all South African citizens. Money lost due to government corruption could have been used to better the lives of all South African citizens, especially the poor, including izinduna.

It does not make sense to say there is no money when there is not a day that goes by without reported cases of corruption in government departments and municipalities.

We demand that the government deals with corruption head on so that South Africans can be convinced if the government says there is no money available to fulfil other demands.
