EDGARS Unite Orange Day is a United Nation and Edgars initiative that empowers abused women through skills development in fashion design.

The partnership between Edcon, United Nations Women, Department of Social Development and Community Safety and Liaison in KwaZulu-Natal has brought an important and positive change in the lives of 40 female survivors of violence based in the province. The project imparts skills, enables sustainability, restores dignity and changes lives of survivors.

“An American teacher wrote in her book, A Treatise on Domestic Economy: ‘Let the women of a country be made virtuous and intelligent, and the men will certainly be the same. The proper education of a man decides the welfare of an individual, but educate a woman, and the interests of a whole family are secured.’ ” said Turning Point Centre Manager, Loraine Odendaal.

She said two female survivors of abuse represented Turning Point Amanzimtoti at the Edgars Unite Orange Day fashion designing competition, finishing among the top contestants.

“It was my first time designing and I was helped and assisted by my friend and our mentor, Venessa Pillay, who is a qualified fashion designer.

“I felt great as all the dresses I designed were done out of my image, especially, the black one, I was telling my story out of it.

“This is a new beginning, I’ve just opened a new chapter of my life and I am looking forward to designing more and spreading my wings,” said the Toti contestant.

An example of some items made by the female survivors and orders can be placed at Turning Point, Amanzimtoti on 031 903 7777.
