Add your weight on Mandela Day

2016-07-13 06:00

EXCITEMENT is mounting at The Domino Foundation as the countdown for this year's International Mandela Day on 18 July has begun.
The organisation has put together some action-packed activities to help celebrate Mandela Day and spend your 67 minutes serving your community.

The mission is simple - spend 67 minutes of your day to support those less fortunate. Participants can choose between three activities, each designed to assist our community in a multitude of ways.

“We have allocated 60-minute time slots per station ranging from 9am to 2pm throughout the day. Simply choose an activity, select a desired time slot, gather the required items listed below and attend our Mandela Day festivities on Monday 18 July at Seadoone Mall, Amanzimtoti,” said foundation spokesperson, Megan Rich.

“Once you have completed your 60-minute activity, we encourage you to join us for refreshments as you use your remaining seven minutes to get to know more about who we are as domino and what we do.”

Action station 1: Sarmie stack

Spend your #67minutes at the Sarmie Stack Station and make peanut butter sandwiches for the hungry in our community. Bring along ingredients below, grab your friends and let’s take action, inspire change and serve our local community.
Ingredients for 300 sandwiches: 30 loaves of bread, 12x250g margarine tubs, 15x800g peanut butter, three packets of sandwich bags (100 bags). Extra donations of peanut butter and mayonnaise for the feeding programme will be appreciated.

Action Station 2: Relief hampers

The Domino Foundation assists a number of families and individuals that are in crisis through relief feeding. Each hamper can feed a family of four for a week, which provides necessary meals during school holidays and over weekends, when general feeding schemes close down. At this station, volunteers are challenged to pack three relief hampers per person. So, if you have a team a 10, you will pack 30 hampers.

Volunteers will bring along items from the list below; sort, package and wrap their hampers. They also have the opportunity to write an encouragement card for families in need.

Ingredients needed - three packets of 1kg rice, three 2,5kg maize packets, three 500g sugar packets, 3 boxes of tea (100 bags), three cans of tinned baked beans, three packets of soy mince (300g), three tins of tuna (170g), three packets of salt (500g), three bottles of oil, three cans of tinned food.

Action station 3: Donation station

If you are unable to join The Domino Foundation at our event, but would still like to get involved, the organisation will be running “collection drives” leading up to Mandela Day for project-needed items (to view the list visit, as well as setting up a donation station where you can drop off these items and spare clothes, blankets, shoes and groceries over and above your chosen activity. So clean out your cupboards, run drives at your office, get your colleagues to do the same and bring along extra donations before or on the day.

RSVP by 13 July to Cheryl via email to book a time slot and take action. Inspire change, and help make every day Mandela Day.
