THE Women’s Institute (WI) celebrated Nan Podmore’s 90th birthday with her at 305 Kingsway on Tuesday, 4 July.Nan attributes her reaching this age to good genes. She was born in Pietermaritzburg and moved to Amanzimtoti 40 years ago and has been a member of the Women’s Institute since. She is also a past president of the WI and for the past 10 years has been a resident at Poinsettia Park.A typical Cancerian, Nan said: “I am a homemaker. I have never been out of South Africa. I love sewing and cooking.” She has a son and a daughter, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Besides wearing glasses for reading and sewing and a hearing aid, Nan has good health. When Nan is not looking after her own family, she leads a rich life in serving the community through WI and also as a former hospice shop staff member.“I have known Nan for 25 years through WI and Nan judged at institute level. She is just a lovely, warm person and everybody adores her. Most memorable, we went on holiday to Cape Town together and used public transport to get around Cape Town. Nan could never get over that,” her friend Doreen Goldschagg said laughing.
