An angiogram should be routine

2015-12-23 06:00

AS women are advised to have pap smears and mammograms, men are advised to undergo prostate testing.

No one has ever suggested that angiograms should be a precautionary must. An angiogram can save lives and medical aids should have this testing on their list of things to do, for the sake and lives of their members.

My husband certainly never made our GP rich.

His hospitalisation was minimal. He never had high blood pressure. He was fit and working.

He started getting very tired, was getting ratty and out of breath, and one night complained of chest pain.

To cut a long story short, off we went to the GP who referred him to a cardiologist.

An angiogram was done and as quickly as one, two, three, my husband was operated on for a quadruple heart bypass.

Amazingly, the body had made its own bypass but this had narrowed and, as the surgeon said, my husband was a fatal heart attack waiting to happen.

My advice to folk is: get to know the symptoms of heart problems.

You will be amazed how many warning signs there are.

Get the angiogram done if necessary as it could save your life.

And it could save a lot of tears, fears and stress.
