Be safe over holiday season

ETHEKWINI Municipality has released a safety management plan for the festive season, which started on 9 December until 18 January, 2016 and with focus on the peak season, from 11 December to 10 January, 2016.

Aquatic safety

Swimming beach operational times are from 6am to 6pm and includes Reunion, Pipeline, Amanzimtoti, Warnadoone, Winklespruit, Umgababa.

For Inyoni north (between Toti and Pipeline) and Inyoni south (between Toti and river) the temporary swimming beach operational times are from 8am to 5pm.

For non swimming beaches, Umbogintwini river mouth, Tiger Rocks, Twini, Baggies and Subway the operational times are from 8am to 5pm.

Aquatic safety personnel on duty will include one manager, one superintendent, one co-ordinator, three senior lifeguards, 20 lifeguards, 10 temporary lifeguards and 30 seasonal lifeguards.

Separated children

On Amanzimtoti main beach children will be issued with wrist bands. Child minders will be deployed and separated children will be kept at the beach office. Children not collected by 6pm will be taken to an overnight facility in Durban Central.

On all other beaches lifeguards will accommodate separated children at their respective facilities. Children not collected by 6pm will be taken to an overnight facility in Durban Central.

Beach cleansing

The public change rooms and toilets are open from 6am to 6pm and depending on demand, facilities at busy beaches will remain open until 10pm.

Beaches will be cleaned daily (including public holidays) from 6am to 6pm.

An additional 150 refuse bins will be deployed and serviced by DSW and additional portable toilets for Umkomaas South bank, Winklespruit main beach, Toti promenade, Tiger Rocks north, Umgababa beach, Warner Beach sports field, Shad Place, river mouth will be serviced every three days.

Beach law enforcement

Permanent staff will work in shifts from 8am to 5pm. Additional security guards will be placed at Isipingo river mouth, Pipeline, Amanzimtoti main beach, Toti beach chain gates, Warner Beach, Winklespruit and Umgababa. A further 20 additional security guards will be deployed on 16, 26 and 31 December and on 1 and 2 January.

Beach road permits

Beach road will be access controlled by Metro Police on 16, 26 and 31 December and on 1 and 2 January and any other date where the situation necessitates access control.
Permits will be on issue to residents from the Metro Police kiosk on the corner of Carlisle and Beach roads from 9 December – ID, proof of address (proof of booking) and your car registration number is essential to secure a permit.
