Business burglary and robbery

TWO cases are being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS where cash was taken from businesses in the early morning hours last week.

“On 2 January, at around 1.25am a man got a call informing him that a panic alarm went off at Mnandi Meats Butchery, Uitsig Road, Kingsburgh. Upon his arrival he noticed a black BMW and VW Polo parked in front of the entrance of the butchery, facing the R603 road. As he continued his approach, the occupants started firing at him. He returned fire upon which both vehicles fled the scene,” Amanzimtoti SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

“On further inspection he discovered the glass door had been smashed to gain entrance and the safe inside the premises bombed. Five R5 rifle cartridges and a Dura fuse were recovered from the scene,” said Van der Spuy.

The number of suspects are unknown and the complainant sustained no injuries. A large amount of cash was taken.

In the second robbery, on 4 January at 2pm, at DSM Mall Winklespruit, suspects arrived in two vehicles - a red Polo Vivo and a blue Toyota Corolla.

“The suspects, approximately eight black males, were wearing balaclavas. They held up the security guard with rifles and proceeded into the building where they blew up two mobile ATMs,” Van der Spuy reported.

Remnants of a fuse and a blasting cartridge were recovered on the scene.
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and the suspects fled the scene towards the direction of the N2 freeway. Both cases are being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS.
