Business robbers in the docks

SUSPECTS aged between 25 and 43 years old will appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court after a gun battle that happened in the early hours from Warner Beach to the Seadoone area on Wednesday, March 7 at 5 am.

Amanzimtoti SAPS has released a notice alerting businesses to lock away all valuables after they noticed a pattern in various business burglaries during the past two months.

A pattern is said to have been picked up by the SAPS when the same vehicle was used to commit the crimes in the area resulting in a joint operation that was conducted between the Amanzimtoti SAPS and other security forces including the neighbourhood watch in the early hours of Wednesday.

The vehicle that had been identified was seen in Kingsway northbound area going towards Warner Beach and the members involved in the joint operation began to pursue the identified vehicle. The suspects began firing at the members and they returned fire until the suspects’ vehicle was surrounded near the Seadoone service station resulting in five suspects being apprehended. One of the five suspects sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital for medical attention under police guard. A firearm and housebreaking tools were recovered and the vehicle impounded for further investigation.

The five suspects are charged with attempted murder, possession of housebreaking implements, possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing of a firearm.

Amanzimtoti SAPS urges business owners to be alert:

•Ensure that your premises has got reliable burglar proofing;

•This warning comes after numerous break-ins at business premises’ in and around our area;

•Doors are being pried open, offices broken into, mounted television sets removed and other various accessible items including petty cash taken;

•Keys to safes should never be left in the drawers in the office nor should safes be left unlocked;

•Business owners should ensure that their alarm systems are in working order at all times and linked to an Armed Response Unit;

•Always run emergency drills with the alarm company to test the working condition of the devices.
