ON October 18, three suspects entered a business in Amanzimtoti CBD on the pretext of purchasing a car battery.

They subsequently robbed the business and fled, but were later apprehended.

“The complainant exited the shop with one suspect to inspect the vehicle, confirming the type of battery they required, while the other two suspects remained in the shop.

“When the complainant re-entered and opened the burglar gate to go behind the counter, the three suspects pushed past the gate and produced a firearm,” said Amanzimtoti SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

“They pointed the firearm at the complainant and instructed her to open the safe, which she did.

The suspects took the money bags inside the safe and instructed the victim to lie on the floor and tied her up with a cell phone charger.

“The suspects then fled with cash, cell phones and a cordless phone. The total value of property taken is estimated at R10 000 0 no shots were fired.”

Captain Van der Spuy said the suspects were chased from the scene by the CCPO Armed Response Unit and during the chase along Kingsway Road, began shooting at the CCPO members.

Amanzimtoti SAPS, Metro Police and ET Armed Response Unit then joined the chase into KwaMakhuta.

“The suspects abandoned their vehicle in the KwaMakhuta cemetery where the members continued their pursuit on foot and apprehended three suspects between the ages of 25 and 31.

“Items recovered were the getaway vehicle, cash taken during the robbery, cell phones, two unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Captain Van der Spuy said.

A case of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened.

The management of Amanzimtoti SAPS commends all involved for their quick response and tenacity in putting their own lives at risk in pursuit and apprehending the suspects.
