THE blood supply in KwaZulu-Natal is about to run out, with only half a day’s stock available at the moment according to the South African National Blood Service. They are calling on all donors and new donors to share life.

Sifiso Khoza, regional marketing manager for the SANBS said: “The bloodstock in KZN is dangerously low. We don’t have blood that can last for the rest of the day- today. We are currently at 0.9, which is 177 Units of blood and we need all blood groups to boost the stock.”

Khoza said that a healthy bloodstock in the province is 500 units of blood a day but now they are down to 177 units. “This means we don’t have enough blood to last even for one day.

“And as much as we need all blood types, blood group O is in demand as it is universal and can be transferable to all patients in need,” said Khoza.

“This is not the first time SANBS has been in a critical level of bloodstock, there was recently a blood drive that ran urgently because of the low bloodstock which may raise the question that the number of donors is decreasing. Residents chatted to Fever about the blood crisis KZN finds itself in.

Sonke Magwaza said: “I used to donate a lot but ever since my mother went into the hospital and needed a blood transfusion and we had to pay a huge amount of money for the pack, I decided that I could not give as regularly as before.” — Fever Reporter.
