A CASE of carjacking is being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS following an incident that occurred opposite Kingsway Hospital on Friday at 7.20pm. Reportedly three unknown black males approached the victim in a red Hyundai Cherry i10.

“The victim was parked at the bus stop opposite the hospital waiting for his girlfriend to knock off duty when he was approached by the suspects,” Amanzimtoti SAPS Captain Charlene van der Spuy reported.

She said according to an eyewitness, the suspects were on foot. They approached the vehicle and allegedly pulled the driver out of the vehicle. The victim was then assaulted by all three suspects and a gunshot went off.

“It unclear at this stage in whose possession the firearm was at the time of incident. The suspects then jumped into the vehicle and sped off. The victim was stabilised by the paramedics and taken to hospital for further treatment,” Van der Spuy said.

“The victim sustained bruises to the face and gunshot wound to front of right thigh. He was in shock and could not give a statement at the time,” she added.

Chris Botha of Netcare 911, said at 7.27pm Friday evening, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the carjack incident.

“A paramedic was on his way to work when he noticed the scuffle with three men trying to pull a man out of his vehicle that was parked along Kingsway Road outside a hospital. The medic ran to alert the security when he heard a shooting. When he looked around he noticed the men pulling the driver from his vehicle,” Botha said.

Within seconds ambulance crews raced out and found the man lying in the road with a serious gunshot wound. His vehicle and the suspects had left the scene.

“Medics worked fervently to stabilise the seriously wounded man before they transported him to hospital,” he said.
