ENVIRONMENTAL support group, the Clean Surf Project hosted another clean up at Winklespruit Main Beach, on January 13, with the support of Sapphire Coast Tourism.

“The main focus of the clean up was to get the beach ready for the upcoming KZN Lifesaving Championships at Winklespruit Main Beach on January 20 and 21,” founder, Denzil van der Westhuizen said.

He said as the competition includes activities such as flags, beach sprints and relays it is important for the sand to be as clean as possible, as plenty of “fine” rubbish had built up over the festive season.

“The team was raking and sieving, as well as putting great effort into the cleaning-up of the lagoon or river. It was shocking to see the amount of plastic bottles, alcoholic glass bottles and polystyrene cups that were collected on the day,” Van der Westhuizen said.

“After a hot, sweaty summer morning, upon completion of the project, the lagoon appeared to be the cleanest in a long time.

“A huge thank you to Winklespruit Lifesaving Club for making the rescue craft available to enter the lagoon,” he added.

The next clean up is to be confirmed.
