Siphiwe Vusumuzi Gcaba (31), was arrested for fraud and appeared in Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on 2 December. His case was remanded for further investigation.

“On 18 October, the victim met with the suspect in Amanzimtoti to discuss a possible business venture.
The suspect told the victim that he received a tender from the Department of Public Works in Pietermaritzburg and wished the victim to subcontract.
According to the suspect, the process was completed, but he had problems with the security amount and asked the victim to meet him halfway with a deposit of R45 000, which he said would be refunded as soon as work starts on the alleged tender,” Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

“On 20 October, the victim met with the suspect at the eThekwini Municipality parking lot in Durban and paid him R10 000 cash. The suspect left the victim in the vehicle and went inside the building coming back with a brown envelope indicating that it contained the contracts.
In the days to follow, the victim paid further amounts on separate occasions of R20 000 and R3 200 into the suspect’s bank account on his request,” she said.

Reportedly after the suspect contacted the victim again for a further R15 000, the victim asked him to meet. They met and victim lured the unsuspecting suspect to a nearby police station asking him to wait inside the vehicle.
The victim then went inside and informed the police about the whole incident and that the suspect was waiting outside in the car.

“A statement, which reflected the amounts paid into his bank account, was found in his possession. The suspect remains in custody,” Captain van der Spuy said.
