TAKING good quality pictures of jewellery for most is an unsolved mystery. However, there are some simple techniques applied by the professional, which even amateur photographers can use to obtain dramatic results with minimal effort.

The keys to good jewellery photography are sharpness, lighting, exposure, and in the case of gemstone photography, creating sparkle. The following equipment was used to create these images:

Product photography tent, black Acrylic sheet (150x150 mm) with continuous lighting and soft box with four times photographic lamp (55W) and flash. A reflector is also very useful to direct light on your subject correctly and a steady tripod with trigger set.

These images were all taken using a Nikon D750 DSLR camera with a 24-70 MM f/2.8 lens. The lens used was not preferable as macro lenses are mostly key. In case of the former being used, do tethering in Photoshop to create fully focused imagery. Tethered photography is the process of connecting your camera to your computer or Tablet with either Firewire, USB or wirelessly. The computer can be a desktop or laptop and in Windows or Mac format.

My client requested single-shot photography, but you can also use a lens extender for desirable results.

Good jewellery photography needs sharp, crisp focus here is how:

Using your camera's manual mode, set the camera in “spot focus” mode. The normal focus mode of digital cameras is some sort of average focus mode, the camera will look at a wide area of a scene and base the focus on that area.

Once you are set up and have followed these steps you will be able to start. Remember, the first time is never easy, keep practicing until you succeed, and if you have the suggested equipment you can also do product photography, food and whatever you imagine.
