Law on firearm owner who dies

2016-10-19 06:00

THE management of Amanzimtoti SAPS urges the community to take note of the following …

Certain procedures need to be followed when the owner of a licensed firearm dies.

The family of the deceased person has four options:

• re-licence the firearm;

• sell the firearm, either to a registered firearms dealer or private person;

• de-activate the firearm by going to a gunsmith for a quotation and then to the police station to complete the necessary application forms; and

• hand in the firearm at the nearest police station for destruction.

All firearms belonging to a deceased family member can be brought to the office of the Designated Firearm Officer at Amanzimtoti SAPS room number one between 8am and 3pm, Mondays to Fridays.

Amanzimtoti SAPS phone number is 031 913 1300.
