THE Mazda MX-5 is the award-winning prized possession of the motoring company and at first it made me feel a little uncomfortable.

Before I got into the car, I wondered how I was going to get out of it without landing on all fours - it almost felt like I was sitting on the ground.

Once you get into the driver’s seat though, you are in driving pleasure. This car is both a sports car and a regular car rolled into one. The road handling is exceptional even at higher speeds with a suspension tweak from the 2016 design.

My trips to Pietermaritzburg were a lot more exciting as I loved nipping in and out of lanes. As a driver, seated close to ground, you have complete control of the car and it is pretty easy to steer. I don’t have a lot of experience with driving sporty cars, but I took to it like a fish in water.

The car is most definitely a head-turner and I almost never drove with the top down. The retractable roof reminded me of a Transformer as it folded away in about 10 seconds.

If you do decide to drive with the roof down, the car’s design has also been tweaked slightly so it’s not exactly horrible wind your face. If you adjust the windows slightly, you will have quite the pleasant drive not putting your hair-do at risk.

This car is perfect for weekend driving and not too bad if you travel light to work. It is two-seater and for my family of two, I could not complain. The boot space is pretty decent for this little car, however, it is enough for a laptop bag and another little bag. I almost managed to squeeze in a week’s supply of groceries.

There is no question that I like driving fast, but at the same time I follow the rules of the road. The safety features in this little coupe makes it difficult not to follow the rules.

It features Lane Departure Warning, blind sport monitoring, hill launch assist and other safety features.

The Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0LRF Roadster Coupe Auto is available from R532 800 and at this price it is a bargain.

Not only, do you get a snazzy looking sports car, the extras that Mazda offers is definitely value for money.

My favourite features include the easy-to-use display, multi-function commander control, rain-sensing wipers and the Bose sound system with nine speakers.

Coupled with the road performance of the Mx-5 this car fast moves to the top of my favourite coupé cars.
