New restaurant opens in ‘birders paradise’

IF there is something a tourist town can never have enough of, it is great restaurants with panoramic views. The new Café Familia may just be it. Situated on the banks of the Illovo River, the spot is not only pleasing to the eye, but also a great place to do birdwatching and satisfy your hunger.

Julia Orbe is by now a familiar name and face when it comes to great food. Her cookbook Cooking for the Freezer/Kook vir die Vrieskas was published by Struik in 2010, a result of her popular meals produced for her catering and frozen meal company, Julia’s Kitchen.

“The idea for a café was born when our catering and frozen meal company enjoyed much success,” Orbe said.

In March, the catering business evolved and she embarked on a new journey, operating as Familia Online Food, and their now famous range of fabulous frozen meals was born.

They are available in-store, but can also be purchased online and are delivered throughout KwaZulu-Natal. They also supply 305 guest houses, Victory Spar and Ubuntu Brew in Seabreeze with meals and muffins.

“There is no match for passion and the love of what you do - the universe aligns itself. Café Familia is the upshot,” Orbe says.

Using their Spanish heritage, and knowledge and their love of food and cooking, the restaurant is a true family owned restaurant.

It is open every day of the week, besides Mondays, for breakfast and lunch and the owner prides herself on a daily special and unique Sunday lunches. On Sundays Pastor Dale Fergusan from Sweetwaters Church conducts a café church from 8.30am to 9.30am. Everyone is welcome to join and enjoy­ a cup of coffee during the service. Their carrot cake has everybody raving and another must-have is their ice cream sourced from Masterchef finalist­, Penny Fitchett.

I am told their milk shakes are “to die for” and they also have the “finest coffee around”.

There is ample space for children to run around outside or toys to play with inside. The restaurant also offers a twist on the ordinary toasted sandwich, which is made with a toasted baguette.

Each Orbe family member, Julia, husband Luis and children Paige and Sebastian designed their own burgers for the café, made from pure beef patties. Follow your lunch with a leisurely stroll along the Burchell’s Coucal Eco Trail, and as they say: “A change is as good as a holiday.”
