IN June 2005, John Follett, was sent for a PSA test after complaining of regular bladder infections and discovered he had cancer.

“My PSA count was 136.8 and the urologist confirmed that I had prostate cancer. He immediately ordered a bone scan and performed an autopsy. For the next 10 years, until June 2015, I visited the urologist every three months and was given a Lucrin injection as well as medication called Casodex. This was the only treatment I received for my prostate cancer in the 10 years,” Follett said.

No follow-up scans were ordered and there was no mention of being referred to an oncologist. In July 2015, he and his wife moved to Amanzimtoti and he was then referred to an oncologist, Dr A. Pirjol, at Amanzimtoti Oncology Centre.

“Within a day I was transferred to Parklands Hospital and was given pain management, and bone scan and preparation work for radiation therapy. I received radiation therapy for three weeks and then prescribed medication called Zytiga,” Follett said.

In October 2015, his PSA had risen to 811.28. It is now at 147.44. As a result of the treatment he has received from Dr Pirjol and her colleagues his health has improved every day.

“I have never experienced such a standard of professionalism, dedication and attention to detail as that from Dr Pirjol and her colleagues and I regard myself to be extremely privileged to be cared for by them,” he said.

“My advice to the men folk over 40 in Amanzimtoti - have your prostate checked every year and if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer insist that you be referred to an oncologist.”
