A LOCALLY practicing veterinarian, who has a deep passion for landscape photography was invited by Art on Kingsway Gallery to exhibit his work at their premises for the month of October.

Eugene van Heerden’s epic shots of the Berg will be available for viewing by art and photography enthusiasts from Saturday, October 13.

Speaking on his muse of the exhibition shots, Van Heerden said: “I love the Berg, and it’s the beauty of the Berg that’s inspired me to spend a lot of my time wandering around the mountains taking photographs, and the photographs are just an expression of what I see and feel the beauty of nature is.”

Feeling honoured to be invited to exhibit his work for the first time, Van Heerden has engaged in photography from the age of 18, when his father bought him his first camera for his birthday.

He currently works in the digital medium, but started off with film and black and white prints.

“In those years yes, black and white film was the thing to do. Little dark room and all fumigated, chemicals, and hot muggy, yes we did that in those days,” said Van Heerden.

Explaining his work, Van Heerden stated that all photography is captured with natural exposure, with a little bit of enhancing. The lighting and colouring is due to most of the pictures being taken very late in the afternoon or very early in the morning.

According to Art on Kingsway’s Brenda Pratt, they were searching for someone to exhibit on the gallery’s back wall when Van Heerden’s works was brought to their attention; thereafter another member of the gallery, Patricia McCann, then approached the veterinarian, who was excited at the opportunity.

Interested persons are welcome to view the first-ever photography exhibition of Van Heerden, as well as the art on display on October 13 at 10 am. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
