Racism is our greatest threat

2016-01-20 06:00

SOUTH Africans of all races witnessed the ugly spectacle of naked racism, which has set back race relations in a deeply divided country.

Racial prejudice continues to trouble relations between people at large. Public opinion is increasingly incensed as a moral conscience can by no means accept it.

Racism exists and reappears continually in different forms. It is a wound in society that mysteriously remains open.

Racism is an evil, irrational and morally contemptible doctrine.

It is a corrosion that has bitten into the fibre and attacked the whole structure of South African society.

We urgently require a shift in perception to combat and exorcise the spectre of racial hatred.

We fail to realise that racism - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason - is our greatest threat.

Racism is tantamount to Satanism, an unmitigated evil. It is the most recalcitrant aspect of the evil in men and women. Racism is an evil which endures in our society, despite apparent advances and significant changes in the past two decades. It persists in covert ways, under the guise of other motives.

It is manifest in the tendency to stereotype and marginalise segments of the population whose presence is perceived as a threat.

There is no antidote for this contagious virus.

The only way to treat toxic racism is to enact stringent laws to combat it.
