Rafting the Umkomaas River for a good cause

SPARKING the adventurer in all of us, Khanya Hospice and Bobbi Bear again benefitted from the Hoodlums charity tube and raft race.

The Hoodlums Motorcycle Club Durban hosted this family fun day at the Umkomaas River (Ski Boat Club) on February 25. A total of 12 teams entered the race and all funds raised will be donated to charity organisations.

The winning team from Sappi returned to take the top spot for the fourth year in a row. The trophy for best spirit was issued to Water Warriors — a mixed team from members of Christ Church and Unashamed Bikers. “We hosted the day for Hospice and Bobbi Bear and it was great fun. We started second, but came dead last. This is because we had a braai on our raft, we also stocked up on water-balloons and a bucket of mud to throw at other contestants. Some guys fell off the raft and had to be helped up again. It was highly enjoyable,” said Hendrik Grobler.

The event is one of the most enjoyable fundraisers on the yearly calendar. “Spectators and participants enjoyed the race and ravenously snacked on eats on offer at the food stalls afterwards and was the best supported event ever. I can truly recommend the ‘koeksisters’ and milk tart and health rusks sold by Katy,” said Neil McDonald, the Khanya Hospice CEO.
