Robbers target metered taxis

2018-01-17 06:00

KWAMASHU SAPS would like to warn Uber and metered taxi drivers to be on high alert when driving in the KwaMashu and the surrounding areas.

This warning came after a number of robberies were reported where criminals would pretend to be clients wanting to be taken from restaurants, nightclubs or other places to their destination around KwaMashu.

The suspects reportedly stop the driver at gun point and rob them of their belongings and take their vehicle.

SAPS are appealing to the drivers to be vigilant and take extra precautions when asked to pick up clients.

On December 31, 2017 at 10.15pm, a 41-year-old driver was dropping a passenger in Ndlondo Road in G section. The passenger paid a short fare and told the driver to wait for someone who would pay the full amount.

Then out of the blue, the complainant was pointed at with a firearm. They took cash and his two cell phones and fled.

In a second incident, on Monday January 1, at 11.20pm, a 24-year-old driver was contacted to pick-up a passenger in Phoenix destined for J section, KwaMashu.

Upon arrival at the destination the suspect ordered to be dropped at, he pulled a firearm from his back and pointed it at the driver. A second suspect approached.

The suspects demanded the driver’s cell phone and took his cash. The driver was then forced to get into the boot of the car. Charges of robbery are being investigated by the KwaMashu SAPS. - Supplied.
