SABC failed to suppress Venter

2017-07-19 06:02

WARREN Oliphant’s candid letter on the role of cowards, reminiscent of the apartheid era, was honest, but also very distressing (The Witness, July 4).

Suna Venter was a principled journalist who placed her life on the line for press freedom.

In addition to the persecution cited by Oliphant, she received death threats, was kidnapped and tied to a tree and even shot at with an unknown weapon.

To date, the police have done very little to bring those who harassed and assaulted the dauntless Venter before the courts.

Like a fresh inquest is being held into the death of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol while in police custody, Oliphant is to the point that one day, the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) will demand a thorough investigation to track the fraidy cats who were behind the torture of Venter.

There are many inside the SABC, together with Hlaudi Motsoeneng and his pawns, who know that they failed with the ANC behind them to suppress a powerful woman who refused to betray our Constitution.

Venter died tragically from prolonged stress that aggravated her existing cardiac condition. She died from what is commonly known as “broken heart syndrome”.
