Sapphire Coast Marathon on Sunday

2016-10-12 06:00

SUNDAY sees the running of the Sapphire Coast Marathon, hosted by Amanzimtoti Athletics Club.

Due to the damage on the railway line no train ride will be offered this year.

Members and motorists are reminded that on Sunday over 2 000 runners will start the race at Riverside Road, Hutchinson Park at 6am.

Runners will follow the following route - up Ndongeni Drive into School Road down Seadoone Road into Kingsway Road through Warner Beach, Winklespruit into Illovo past Karridene Hotel turning at Umkomaas and returning on the same route to the finish at Hutchinson Park.

Marshalls and Metro Police will assist motorists on Sunday morning and the club apologises for any inconvenience or delays with traffic flow.

Cut-off for the race is 11am and the major congestion will be at the cut-off finish at Lords and Legends.

There are nine water tables along the route providing water and Coca-Cola and at the 32km marker at Karridene Hotel.

Snacks will be supplied for runners, provided by the hotel.

The club thanks their volunteers who will be manning the tables, including Meuman and White, Hyundai Amanzimtoti, Venus Gym, Wimpy, Karridene Hotel, Amanzimtoti AC juniors and parents, Amanzimtoti Lions Club, Scottburgh Lions Club, Umkomass Running Club and Rho-tech.

This year they have joined the “run clean campaign” and each water station will have eight bins next to the watering table.

Athletes are asked to make use of the bins and help keep the town clean and litter-free.

The race has also attracted international runners from Australia, the U.S., Britain, France and Germany, who will be staying in Amanzimtoti

Local clubs with the biggest entry is team Vitality with 50 followed by South Coast Striders with 35.

Athletes who have pre-entered can register on Saturday at the Toti Running Club from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 4am.

Members are asked to make use of the civic centre parking.

A reminder - no entries will be taken on race day

The race committee wishes runners a safe run, and once again, please make use of the bins provided at each water table.

The race is a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier. - Supplied.
