TO commemorate World Animal Week, which took place in early October, Amanzimtoti SPCA held collections at various malls in order to raise funds for the organisation.Michelle Hannan of the SPCA said: “SPCA is always struggling financially. We haven’t received Lotto funding in a few years so all the money that SPCA needs to function is raised by various fund-raising methods we have at the SPCA and also by the wonderful help we receive from our sponsors, supporters and volunteers. “Going now into our busy season with many strays coming in over the festive period as well as it being breeding season with so many puppies and kittens, we need to make a push to receive extra much-needed funding. We use the World Animal Week to go out and do a street collection in the area that we take care of. We hope to bring knowledge and education to the public at the same time. “This week is not just an SPCA event but a world event for all animal shelters all over the world,” added Hannan. The SPCA would like to thank Seadoone Mall and Pick n Pay Hyper Arbour Crossing for allowing the SPCA’s volunteers to collect at their malls. The SPCA would also like to thank the volunteers who assisted on the day, as well as all those who contributed.Celebrated annually, World Animal Week coincides with the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals (October 4). The aim of the week is to raise awareness about the welfare of animals, and to help make the world a safer place for them.
