2017-04-12 06:00

ON February 17 at 11.15pm members on patrol in Amanzimtoti received a complaint via radio control of the theft of cables in progress along Andrew Zondo Road, Amanzimtoti.

On their arrival at the scene, two suspects were found hiding in a manhole.

“The suspects were found in possession of cutting tools and the cut copper cables to the estimated value of R708 000. The suspects were then arrested and taken to Amanzimtoti police station where a case of theft was opened,” said SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

The suspects, Sabelo Mhlongo (28) and Senzo Ntuku (24) were charged and appeared in Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on February 20.

The case was remanded for further investigation and suspects remained in custody.

Investigating officer Constable Nokukhanya Ndlovu attached to the Amanzimtoti Detectives successfully opposed bail on March 28 due to the prevalence and the value of the copper cables.

The magistrate indicated that the suspects are looking at a sentence not exceeding 30 years’ imprisonment due to them disturbing the infrastructure of our town and therefore disrupting service delivery to our community.
