Time to take back power from Sadtu

2016-01-20 06:00

THE hype around the 2015 matric results is nothing but a spectacle.

The Department of Basic Education’s deputy minister, Enver Surty, is on record as stating that the department has a “solid relationship” with Sadtu, which not so long ago told Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to “hang her bloomers to dry”.

Motshekga stressed the importance of giving pupils every opportunity to write matric, but is also on record as stating that “matric is not important”.

At provincial level, Sadtu has already passed the blame to the provincial leadership of education.

Despite allegations of serious corruption by Sadtu, the union enjoys a relationship with an employer that is powerless to charge it for selling posts.

Teacher involvement in group copying in the past three matric examinations appears to be condoned, and significantly inept Sadtu members are deployed into the Department of Basic Education.

KZN’s matric results will improve and education will earn respect when the arrogant Sadtu is told that it is not in charge of education - the government is.

School inspectors must be reintroduced despite Sadtu’s opposition.

It is no secret that the education budget is exploited for corruption using the provision of services.

As correctly asserted by political commentator Justice Malala, it’s time for Motshekga to hold the knife by its sharpest side.
