Toti Athletic Club responds to race litter complaint

2015-11-25 06:23

THE letter regarding the litter after the Sapphire Coast Marathon on 20 October refers.

I’m the club captain for the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club that organised the Sapphire Coast Marathon that Sunday.

I would just like to set the record straight regarding the water tables’ plastic bottles and water sachets that were left on the road.

We have 14 water tables manned by various corporate companies in and around Amanzimtoti and these members spend most of the morning handing out water sachets and bottles of Coca-Cola to the runners to prevent dehydration.

This year’s race was extremely hot with windy conditions.

Each water table is provided with cardboard rubbish bins and a bin bag in each dustbin for the runner to dispose of his or her rubbish.

Unfortunately, many runners just throw their rubbish on the road knowing that the host club will pick up their rubbish they have thrown on the street.

The clean-up protocol works as follows - each water table personnel then cleans up after the last runners have passed their water station.

The Amanzimtoti Athletics Club, two trucks and 16 helpers do a finale clean-up of the route from Scottburgh to the finish at Hutchinson Park.

This year the cleaning operation was hampered by the strong wind we had on the Sunday during the race, blowing refuse everywhere.

When we got complaints from the public some of our members checked and cleaned up the route from Hutchinson Park to the Illovo bridge on Monday and Tuesday.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the litter and traffic congestion throughout the morning on race day.

The positive for the event is that international athletes will be staying in Amanzimtoti over the weekend and the SABC will be televising the race, highlighting our beautiful Sapphire coastline.
