WELCOME to my new travel column, through which I hope to inspire, help or just indulge you.

Come along to famous international destinations, dreamy beaches, beautiful villages where time has stood still and to amazing local spots.

I am a retired solution architect (telecoms engineer), mom to a matriculant and a pre-schooler and travel nut. Suffering from an affliction named “fernweh”, let me share my symptoms, solutions and life’s passion with you.

With Rio 2016 still fresh in our mind, let’s start with Brazil, specifically Rio – a “visa-free” and relatively affordable destination for “visa-allergic” and cash-strapped South Africans.

The heart and soul of Rio is best described by its cultural icon, the famous Christ the Redeemer statue - a symbol of peace, hope and love.

One of the new Seven Wonders of the World, this massive 38m tall statue sits majestically at the top of Mount Corcovado, overlooking this unique and breathtakingly beautiful city. Designed by a local engineer and sculpted by two French engineers, it took nine years to build, and opened in 1931.

Even for the non-religious, this statue of Christ expresses a sense of majesty, reverence, openness, love and grace and standing beneath it, one cannot escape an almost chilling feeling of complete wonder and awe.

Not only does Rio have incredible beaches, it is also sprinkled with impressive mountains.

A trip up the Sugar Loaf cable car affords one another completely different set of views, and a helicopter trip encompassing all the main sights is a definite bucket-list tick.
