FIVE years ago Santa Bodenstein started Roses Gifts and Decor in Illovo Beach. Starting her business was also a new beginning for her, leading her on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

“When I started the business, I was not well and my husband thought Roses would heal me. He was right. I was a shopaholic, and now I can shop to my heart’s desire and resell,” she says.

The gift shop is a treasure chest of unique decor and gifts in the latest colours and themes of the season.

Most of her customers are word-of-mouth referrals and not only include locals, but also those from Umkomaas, Scottsburgh and Johannesburg.

“I am well known for my Christmas launch and many people fly down for it,” Bodenstein explained.

She used more than 200m of Christmas gift wrapping the past season, although free gift wrapping is offered all year round and is a sought-after service.

“I have always had an interest in interior design and decorated our homes and those of friends,” Bodenstein said.

The couple worked at Parliament in Johannesburg and later moved to Ramsgate, before settling in Amanzimtoti.

Currently duck egg (silver-gray) colours are popular for decor and one can never go wrong with pink according to her.

“Pink always sells in my shop,” she said.

Washed furniture is also popular, along with candle holders and crystal. Bodenstein has a quick stock turnover and buys new stock every week from suppliers in major South African cities and towns, such as her clothing range from Brits.

Also popular are ornaments and decor flowers.

“I am looking for exclusive items, not available locally. I buy material and make most of the items like the scatter cushions, table cloths, curtains and do the embroidery myself, which is also therapeutic. I never had an interest in needle work, until one Christmas, when my friend Hannetjie said she was going to teach me to make Christmas decor items.

“Once I started, I could not stop. I now have two machines and an over-locker. I originally rented a shelf in a shop in Pennington, until my husband, Stoffel saw this shop and decided to rent it on my behalf.”

When she is not shopping or working she loves cooking and entertaining. “My grandchild Suné, my two sons, Pierre and Jacques, husband, my dad Jan and my family are extremely important to me.”

Another favourite pastime of hers is watching Afrikaans movies.

“I love supporting Afrikaans movies and watch them all, even when people say they are not great. The last one I saw was Kampeerders meaning ‘campers’ and it was hilarious. I also buy Afrikaans DVDs and pass them on to my grandchild,” she said.

Camping is however not her type of holiday.

“Train trips are my favourite, and we have done many, including in Venus and the most luxurious Rovas Rail and the Blue Train, and I also love boat cruises,” she said.

Her next trip is business and pleasure when she will buy the latest trinkets, angels and crystal and visit her father.
