AT just R30 you can ruin and lose your life – yes, just one hit is all it takes to start your journey towards a living hell and soon death.

The country is up in arms about the drug whoonga. People are asking what it is, how is it used and why do people use it?

It is a concoction of a low grade heroin mixed with other powerful substances. If you have a look at your household cleaning products you will be looking at the other powerful substances that is mixed into the low grade heroin to produce whoonga.

Whoonga gets mixed with marijuana - 85% of marijuana is mixed. Sorry to those who thought it was okay to smoke weed. This is one of the reasons why it is not.

It is popular for dealers to add whoonga to their marijuana supply without you knowing to get you hooked. Whoonga can also be smoked on its own through a piece of foil and heated up.

Once the user has smoked a hit of whoonga, they will feel an intense euphoria coupled with relaxation and contentment. The problem is, after the users high has worn off, withdrawals kick in.

The withdrawal symptoms are feelings of intense pain all over your body, as if every single bone was snapping over and over, cold sweats, no appetite, and mood outbursts - no matter what you do they will not go away until you have another hit of whoonga. This is why people get addicted so quickly.

Whoonga is now being sold in medicinal capsules, making it difficult to identify and to confuse people (especially children) as to what it is.

Captain Charlene van der Spuy - Amanzimtoti SAPS PRO - has confirmed that whoonga is now being sold in capsules in Amanzimtoti.

The only way to recover from whoonga is to have medical treatment and rehabilitation, which is costly. Many people do not have the finance to buy the withdrawal medication, they would rather pay another R30 for a hit, instead of R400 for medication.

That is why it is incredibly important to gain knowledge and educate people about drugs and what they do - it is easier not to try it at all than try recover from drugs.
