The Langa High School Alumni has been duly launched and is now operating above ground, after a committee has been elected.During the launch, an interim Constitution was adopted as a guiding and working document that will ensure that the interim executive committee coordinates activities towards the 80th anniversary since Langa High School was formed. The aims and objectives of the Association are: To establish, maintain and promote bonds, interaction and networking between members and between members and LHS.To support the goals of LHS and the goals of the LHS School Governing Body, to raise funds for LHS, to administer funds raised in such a manner as may be determined from time to time, to provide strategic input into LHS affairs, to create and administer sub-committees and trusts or to form associations with other entities to further the interests and objectives of the Association and to grow and strengthen its membership and to maintain an active involvement with and physical presence at LHS and to do all things incidental to the furtherance of the objectives.However, the committee’s immediate task is to organize activities to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1976 uprisings on 11 August in Langa, which resulted in the death of Xolile Mossie who was shot by the police.Mossie was the first victim to die in Langa in 1976 when the students marched to the Langa Police Station to demand the release of their fellow sstudents who were detained earlier in the day.The former students of Langa High School are planning various activities on 11 August 2016, starting with a short assembly at Langa High School. From there they will move to the Langa graveyard to clean Mossie’s garve and those of other people who died on that day. The events will end with sport activities on Saturday, 13 August 2016 at the Langa High School grounds and conclude with a memorial lecture at the Guga S’thebe Cultural Centre also in Langa. These activities are planned jointly with Gauteng Chapter of the Association, whose members will be joining the Cape Town Chapter on 11 August 2016.The work of the Interim Executive Committee will continue and culminate in the formal launch of the Langa High School Alumni Association on 23 September 2017.A General Meeting will be called to adopt a new constitution and elect an executive committee to manage the business of the Association. In this regard there is a meeting to be held at Langa High School on 31 August 2016 at 14H00. All former Langa High School students are urged to attend.Accepting his selection as Chairperson of the Interim Committee Willy Maliwa pledged from the onset to ‘’work closely with the Langa High School Governing Body and the rests of the LHS community to ensure that Langa High School returns to its past glory of academic, sports as well as musical excellence. The Executive Committee as well as people in attendance at the meeting also pledged to make true the promise of Langa High School’s Motto: ‘’Sic Luceat Lux Vestra’’, which literally means ‘’Let Your Light Shine On.’’The full interim executive committee is as follows: Willy Maliwa as Chairperson and Chris Nkonyana as Treasurer. Twelve additional members were selected, occupying various positions, ranging from deputy chairperson and secretary.
