Luhlaza High School is turning 30 years old, and everbody’s invited, come February 2016.

Three decades is no small feat for a school with an illustrious academic history.

Former staff members and alumni are invited to help join in making the celebrations just as breathtaking.

The planning of the big celebrations has been in the pipeline for a while now as the school’s alumni have been toying with the idea for a couple of years.

Things have taken a serious turn and everyone involved is eager for the occassion; a committee has been set up and preparations are at an advanced stage.

Songezo Vananda, an alumni, said the big celebrations will take place in February 2016.

“On 17 February next year the school will be turning exactly 30 years old. We will have a small function where we will celebrate with learners and parents. It’s going to be during school hours and we don’t want o interrupt lessons,” said Vananda.

But this is not where the fun ends as the committee is planning two more events in the birthday month.

“Two days later, after that small celebration we will then host a gala dinner to raise funds for the big celebrations that will take place later that month.

We wouldn’t like to use the school funds to host the celebrations and this is why we are starting to fund raise as early as possible,” said Vananda.

The committee is hoping to continue the project by setting up alumni society for the benefit of the current and future learners of the school.

“We are in the process of setting up an alumni association which will help learners with career guidance, bursaries and learnerships programmes. There is also a need for the school to be fast tracked in the information technology highway and computing so it will be one of the alumni association’s main objectives to improve to facilities,” said Vananda.

Manono Makhaphela, school principal, said that he hoped that the involvement of former learners will inspire the current crop.

“In the past the school has had many successes and achievements as well as individuals who have become influential people.

Having them spearhead this project will surely inspire the learners of today towards successful careers or as business people,” said Makhaphela.

He said the alumni always boost their prospects of reviving the schools culture of excellence.

“Throughout the three decades, the school has had exemplary staff and learners and we are hoping that having an alumni association will help revive that culture at the school,” he said. Vananda invited former learners at the school to also avail themselves during the planning. Interested persons can email to info@luhlazaalumni.org.za
