The lack of positive role models in the townships leads to the youth hero worshipping criminals and bandits.

It is for this reason that Nyanga artist and businessman, Sello Mangwana, embarked on a quest to start an initiative where exemplary young people from the townships share their expertise.

Business Connect is the name of this initiative which will begin with an event this coming weekend.

Young local businessmen such as Bheki Kunene, SirVincent Manzini, Phila Magidigidi as well as Nathanial Roloff will speak at the Saturday 10 October event at the Zolani Centre in Nyanga.

According to Mangwana the aim of the event is to motivate young and older people in the community.

“We would like show that there are young people in our neighbours that have managed to start successful businesses and initiatives.

There just aren’t enough stories of how people managed to beat the odds Ekasi so we must give these people the platform to tell these stories,” said Mangwana.

Mangwana said that the event was open to everyone who wanted to attend as there isn’t any entrance.

“In many business or inspirational events there is often and entry fee. I don’t feel that this is wrong as many business people turn into professional speakers. However with this event, we want to empower young people who are not working it would be unjust for us to ask them to pay,” he said.

Mangwana, who apart from being a member of kwaito group Ruffest also runs record label Full Moon, said that the initiative was part of his efforts to give back to his community.

“It wouldn’t be giving back if I had asked people to pay, with that said I would like to encourage people to take full advantage of this opportunity.

It will be very rare to have this entire inspirational people in one room giving you tips and relaying their stories of success,” he said.

The list of speakers is indeed inspirational having businessmen such as Gugulethu’s Bheki Kunene who at 27 is the founder of a website company which has an international clientele.

His company Mind Trix is one of the most successful ITC business in the townships that continues to offers wonderful opportunities to young locals.

Another speaker is Sizwe Nzima who founded Iyeza Express which provides a transport service for chronic medication on bicycle
