Crossroads opera singer, Abongile Fumba will be on stage at Artscape Theatre next week in Verdi’s popular La Traviata.

Abongile is excited to be a part of this production which she describes as “beautiful, both musically and dramatically”.

La Traviata tells the story of Violetta, a terminally ill prostitute who is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of Alfredo, a nobleman, public reputation and his sister’s marriage prospects.

The piece explores themes like a human being’s right to love and live as they choose, regardless of who they are or where they come from.

Abongile plays the role of Violetta’s maid, Anina. “Although I would have loved to be Violetta,” she jokes.

She describes Anina as very protective of Violetta and always aware of everything happening around her.

Abongile is a first year postgraduate student in music at the University of Cape Town under the supervision of Professor Virginia Davids.

She has already worked with a few opera companies, including the Cape Town Opera and says most of her performances have been in production that are collaborations with the UCT Opera School.

To prepare for her role as Anina, Abongile attended musical coaching sessions and worked closely with her teacher to learn the music.

“What I found challenging about the role is actually being that person, the character itself, and actually singing the music,” she says. La Traviata will be staged at Artscape Opera House at 19:30 on Thursday 30 April Wednesday 6 and Friday 8 May and at 18:30 on Saturday 2 and 9 May.

Tickets cost between R125 and R250 and are available at Computicket
