Cry, the beloved Dube Birds

2015-06-04 06:01

The year was 1980 , it was a Mainstay Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows.

Orlando stadium was so filled to capacity that other spectators had to stand along the touch line.Down in Cape Town, the man who used to manage the Nyanga East Football Stadium, Mr Adams graciously allowed us young boys to watch the cup final in his house, he had a colour television set.

I was so mesmerised that I became an instant Birds supporter that day.

Although we lost that game, I have never looked back. I still support Izinyoni till this day.

In my veins, runs blood that is Maroon and White .

The players of today, do not carry the pride of the team, albeit its history and legacy .When Swallows lost the game to Cosmos I cried and reminisced that if the likes of Aaron “RoadBlock” Makatini and Thomas “Who’s Fooling Who” Hlongwana were around to witness this betrayal, they would hide in shame.

I am sure they are turning in their graves as we speak.

I wish I can share fond memories of the team that once boasted the likes of Moses Khanyeza, Phillip Venter, James Mabena, Ephraim Mashaba, Trott Moloto, Andries Maseko, Congo Malebane, Aubrey Makgopela, Jeff Ntsibande, Joel Mongezi “Ace” Mnini. Sorry Nyoni, Sorry Swai-Swai
