Education fails economy

2015-06-18 06:01

The unemployment rate for the ages 25 to 35 is sitting at about 48%.

Our unemployment rate is the third highest in the world after that of Greece and Spain. This simply means that more than eight million of our young citizens are not employed. Out of those, 47% don’t have matric.

Only 8% of university students complete their degrees, and the majority of them are young black women.

Our economy needs skilled employees, so we must start to fix our education system. Colleges and universities need to start producing relevant qualifications that are needed by the economy. We need more engineers, plumbers and accountants. The focus must also be on giving people skills in renewable energy, water distribution and sanitation. Also, our economy is growing at less than 2% and it’s unable to create new jobs.

Our education system needs to change and start to promote entrepreneurship even at primary school level. We need a curriculum that will encourage the youth to be self-employed.

Our economy needs new industrialists and innovators who will help to create new jobs. We also need a youth unemployment summit to try and find solutions. I believe that those who don’t have jobs can come up with solutions to their problems.

I don’t believe that young people have any reason to celebrate Youth Month. The young people of 1976 were activists who fought for their rights. The youth of today must wake up and fight for what they want
