Father’s letter to daughter

2015-05-21 06:00

My dearest daughter

I hope these few lines find you in good health.

I am all alone, quietly thinking of you and the journey ahead.

It is a fact that for most parents, the only recourse is to daily imbibe tablets for this depressing condition or that, caused mainly by their off-spring.

I am not one of those(yet).

This, I believe, is because we have an open line of communication. At times we shed tears, but we soon set clearer goal and the problem is resolved.

You sometimes make me sit up in my bed at night plotting a plan for the future. This is not easy for a father.

A lot of sacrifice goes into raising a girl-child; am not complaining, though.

I know that, ultimately, we all want to see you succeed, the odds notwithstanding.

You have a support structure a bunch of kids would die for. But, like all teenagers and their parents, we do not always see eye-to-eye.

In your mind, your mother seems to have an ubiquitous presence in your life, but like all teenagers, you secretly harbour the feeling that she were elsewhere.

I wish to inform you that, should you share that sentiment with parentless children, you’ be shaken out of your protective shell.

You are loved indeed.

All parents want to see their children succeed in life. Some even have plans in place for their wedding dresses. The means to achieve this are always put as priority in the list of things to be done. Children provide a sense of purpose to all parents.

We all want to shield our children from the harsh realities of life.

As adults, our mantra has become: We’ve been there, seen that, done that.

So, it a road well travelled by us. Beware!

Listen attentively when spoken to. Believe me, it helps to calm the rapids.

Not everyone out there will like you.

Some will hate the fact that you are well taken care off. Some will hate you because you are my daughter. Some will hate you for no apparent reason at all. These are inevitable, but can be avoided.

There are two types of people in this world. Those who posses will. And those who live in a world created by people who possess will. I recommend the first category for you based on my past experience.

Perception is reality. That is the manner of approach to life. You must play your positive role as a trusted ambassador. Many people can’t make it past this hurdle.

I have tried to be a positive role model in your education. I know you do have a sense of pride to have such a father. I had decided to take you along on my graduation day for my second law degree.

My late dear mother (may her spirit always prevail) and your elder sister were also present. The three most important people in my life! I still treasure that day as the most significant in my life.

I had done so in order for you to appreciate education. I know you will encounter some individuals among your peers who will compare themselves with you.

Understand that there is a difference between an educated person and a learned one. I worked hard to belong to the latter group.

I also took you to my classes at school whenever there were problems concerning your baby-sitter. That created a lively environment for my learners because they witnessed a bonding session between father and daughter. Some of them still make enquiries about your well-being to this day.

The more effort you put in your studies right now, the clearer the path becomes for success. Tertiary education takes more from past experiences in basic education. There is no way you can achieve your goal without this hardship. I love you.

Your father
