One of Gugulethu’s pioneering artists Nosisa Frances ‘Sta-Fray’ Kente was laid to rest last Saturday.

Born 88 years ago, Sis Frances as she was affectionately known, is the sister of the world renowned late playwright Gibson Kente, who was dubbed the “Father of Black Theatre in South Africa.”

She passed away on May 23 after a short illness.

Sis Frances turned her NY3A home into a “melting pot of talent”, as young artists the likes of the late Brenda Fassie are known to have often visited the house to hone their musical talent.

Having spotted and nurtured Brenda’s talents, she introduced her brother Gibson, who immediately made it possible for “Mabrrr” to become a national icon.

Sis Frances was an inspiration to a lot of other artists.

If you wanted to catch a glimpse of any musical star, you simply popped in at her famous watering hole and you were sure to bump into jazz greats like saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, pianist Tete Mbambisa and saxophonist Ezra Ngcukana and many more. Many will remember Sis Frances as ‘Gogo Nombasa’ in a television film titled Mama’s Love produced her brother
