Ikamva Awards reward top performing pupils

Ikamva Youth Organisation hosted their own academic awards in a bid to aknowledge top performers at the school.

Ikamva is a NGO which supports grade 11 and 12 learners by providing a free tutoring service with tutors drawn from tertiary institutions.

The event was held at the Zolani Centre in Nyanga east last week..

“Our aim is to increase skills level within the youth, create a platform and sustainability,” said Nadine Smith, a facilitator at the organisation.

Touted as the Kamvanites Youth Academic Awards, the event saw dedicated tutors receiving recognitions for their hard work.

“Our biggest objective is to create a platform where they can be able to build their own future. Teaching them to take responsibility by empowering them and encouraging though such an event. We hope that today’s activities will motivate and inspire them to continue their work,” Smith.

IKamva is driven by former learners who were also tutored in the project such as Thandiwe Silo.

Silo said that the initiative has had a massive input in her life.

“The programme has improved us in every parts of my life. It has provided the youth with extra support by having tutors be the agents for change.

The tutors also gain as they gain valuable skills such as teaching and teamwork which is pivotal at tertiary level,” said Silo
