I sometimes like it when people talk loud. Sometimes I don’t. This time I did, although at first I didn’t. We were in a train coach and I was tired of waiting. I even dozed off while waiting for it.

When we got on, it was full. I had to stand. And there were these two elderly men talking. They were nicely dressed – casual. Which sort of informed me they were from around town.

Not the kind that comes from emakhaya. The way they were talking, it was as if they wanted everyone to listen to them. Like as if “You guys know nothing! Listen to us! We do.” And listen we did. Or, I did.

Even though I did not want to. I did. And what did they talk about?

The usual stuff: moaning. You know how whites are ripping us off. You know how much they are getting a month.

And how much we do. And the yawning gap in-between. Who does not know that? And yet what the two were telling us was not new, as if it was. You see how enervating that can be? I felt like dozing off. But I was standing. So I listened. Then they went to business. Again things were not going all right. There was this. There was that. What a gloomy picture! I am sure you wouldn’t want me to tell you all the details. Otherwise you will doze off.

So let’s leave it there. I got to my destination and got off onto a taxi. Guess who sits next to me? One of them! He was a likeable fellow with a sweet smile. I liked him. I asked what business he was in.

He said he was a pensioner. I felt sorry for him. You know I did. You find these fellows that want to do something, but are not able to. They try this. They try that, but nothing. Why?

Was he in business before? I asked. He told me he started as a swimming pool builder and repairer. But saved some money to buy a lorry and some material to build houses. He was a hard worker. While working he used to give his lorry away, and got broken. Now it was at home doing nothing. He has brothers who are drunkards. If they could repair it and make money he would be glad. How about the building material, I asked? It was there too, he said. But he was an old man now. The energy is gone. The youth of today are useless. He wanted to employ them, but who? The more he talked the more I realized he was creating obstacles for himself. Are you like that? Do you see only obstacles? Or, do you see hope? I hope you see hope, for if you do not, goodbye future. Stay positive
