Swift detective work from Harare SAPS has resulted in the conviction of two men who robbed a couple and raped one of the victims five months ago.

In the early hours of Wednesday 28 January this year, Olwethu Nonyenga (21) and Sithembile Mvunyiswa (27) broke in two Mandela Park homes.

“The front door was forced open and two males entered. One of the suspects pointed the victims with a firearm while the other was ransacking the house. Goods to the value of R10000.00 were taken. Before the suspects left the scene they made turns to rape the wife in the presence of her husband while he was kept at gunpoint,” said Harare SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Siyabulela Vukubi.

Vukubi said that investigations by Detective Sergeant Bradley Davids led to the arrest of Nonyenga.

“He was positively linked to the crime scene by means of fingerprints as well as DNA. He further pointed out his co- accused Sithembile Mvunyiswa. Bail was successfully opposed and both accused were remanded in custody,” said Vukubi.

On Tuesday 12 May both the accused were sentenced in the Special Court at Khayelitsha Magistrate Court. They were each sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for Housebreaking, 10 years imprisonment for aggravated robbery and 20 years imprisonment for Rape
