“Mama Kaap” shows appreciation for the aged on her birthday

The Langa Arts Association recently honoured veteran singer Sylvia Mdunyelwa by making Friday October 23 a special day in her life.

As its founding chairperson, the association decided to throw her birthday by hosting a section of the community that is closest to her heart.

Senior citizens, that is, were invited to celebrate with her at the Langa Indoor Sports Complex.

About 200 elderly from different senior clubs were treated to a three course dinner.

They were also treated to a dramatic play called Ibhekile Evuzayo- about threats to the age-old custom of initiation into manhood.

The play is written and directed by Sindile Moya and Mzubanzi Tema, with performances by young boys and girls from Project Playground (PPG).

Mdunyelwa also sang on her birthday, with the Langa High School jazz band and Isilimela High School also providing some music.

DJ Amaza Ntshanga, of Umhlobo Wenene fame made a speech, so did SABC Regional Manager Nada Wotshela, who mobilised sponsorship from the SABC Foundation, which contributed to resounding success of the event.

Said Wotshela: “Sylvia is a very special person whose richness of soul is in the love of her people and passion for their development and progress.”

Mrs. Dlova, speaking on behalf of the elderly, said the community knows that Sylvia loves them and they love her too.

The guests and beneficiaries were extremely impressed by the gesture of their beloved and favourite daughter when they shuffled home carrying small gifts.

“Oh, she is a special person. She will be greatly rewarded for what she did for us today,” said one gogo. “I am going to sleep peacefully tonight on a full stomach. We enjoyed the delicious food and entertainment,” another added. “My grandson is the one who played the initiate. I was so proud of him. Oh, it was a beautiful occasion!”

Those were the words of a proud grandmother. There were also a few men who enjoyed the treat. It was a day to remember.
