The City of Cape Town’s Naming Committee recommended the Memorialisation Policy to the City’s Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, on Wednesday.

Once approved by the Mayor and adopted by a full Council, this policy will guide all future decisions concerning proposals for new memorials and monuments across the city.

The aim of the Memorialisation Policy is to provide guidance in decision-making when the City has to deal with requests for new memorials on City-owned land or on land that is managed by the City.

In accordance with this proposed policy, any person, organisation or community may submit a proposal for a new memorial – be it a statue, public artwork, memorial plaque, mural, garden, square, wall, building, commemorative event or lecture – to the office of the Executive Mayor, who will table this proposal for consideration to the Naming Committee.

A panel of experts may be appointed to assist the Naming Committee and, if required, a public participation process may be undertaken as well. These processes will enable the Naming Committee to make a recommendation to the Executive Mayor on the suitability of the proposed memorial. The Executive Mayor will then make a recommendation to Council
