The Department of Health is advising family members and those close to patients to make sure that they are registered properly when they are sent to hospitals to avoid mistakes.

This is after a Thambo Village family spent close to a month searching for their member whose name was incorrectly spelled when she was taken by an emergency services personnel at her home in Manenburg.

Last week, City Vision published the story of Ntombekhaya Manyamalala, 41, who was last seen by her family on Thursday 27 August when she left with an ambulance.

Her sister Phuthuma Mntunjani, 29, said that she was shocked to learn that Manyamalala was not admitted to the nearest hospital IN Hanover Park Community Health Centre. She then told City Vision that she had gone to various hospitals and morgues but could not find her sister.

It was later revealed by the health department that Manyamalala was admitted at Hanover Park CHC but there was an error in the spelling of her name.

“She was then seen by a doctor and immediately transferred to the overnight ward at Heideveld Emergency Centre for further management of her condition,” said health spokesperson Sithembiso Magubane.

Magubane said that Manyamalala received medical care before she was transferred to another hospital.

“She was admitted to the overnight ward where she received the necessary care and treatment until she was transferred to Mitchells Plain Hospital’s Carnation Ward on 3 September 2015 ,” he explained.

Manyamalala is still a patient at the Carnation Ward. Magubane urged families and patients to make sure that they bring identification when a patient is sent to hospital.

“We encourage all clients to bring along their identity documents
