Two men were arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle after a long and dramatic chase.

The two were arrested by the Saps’ K Unit in Browns Farm Yesterday.

“Police spotted a suspicious vehicle at about 11:20 in Vanguard Drive. They tried to pull it over but the suspects started firing shots at the police. A chase ensued,” said Nyanga saps spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

The culprits were ultimately apprehended when their veered off road.

“In the end two suspects were caught, one was injured and is in hospital and a third suspect managed to escape.

A Norrinco 45mm firearm, six live rounds were confiscated and the serial number was filed off. The vehicle was reported stolen in Pinelands, this month,” she said.

The suspects will appear in Athlone Magistrate Court this week for the possession of a stolen vehicle and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.Meanwhile, more than seventy suspects, confiscated three unlicensed firearms and a number of drugs.

According to police these suspects were arrested during operations conducted this past week.

“Seventeen suspects were apprehended for being in possession of drugs which resulted to 52g of dagga confiscated as well as 28 units of tik, 10g of heroine and 11.5 mandrax tablets. Twelve suspects were apprehended for crimes against women and children of whom six of those suspects were apprehended for cases of rape,” said Sitshitshi.

She revealed that eight suspects were also apprehended for two cases of murder, seven in one case and one in another case.

“Twenty-four suspects were apprehended for assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm GBH, three for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and three firearms were confiscated. Other suspects were apprehended for various crimes,” she said.
